Welcome!
The Wizards Play Network initiative is a renewed dedication towards providing additional support for grass roots play on a global level. We have created this initiative to support a wider variety of play formats and broader reaching local events that go beyond current OP events such as Friday Night Magic and the Pro Tour.
The Wizards Play Network announced its new levels and requirements last month. We announced that all members would gain access to Launch Parties and those qualified for Core-Level would be eligible to run the very popular Friday Night Magic, the new D&D Delve Night, and also host Magic Prereleases.
After that announcement many of you were very excited to know how to sign up and have this content for your players – and this is what this announcement is about!

Magic Launch Party -- Shards of Alara
Firstly, Gateway members are eligible to host the next Magic Launch Party for Shards of Alara on October 3rd to 5th.
All Wizards Play Network Organizers are eligible to host a Shards of Alara Launch Party. Launch Parties provide Magic: The Gathering players with a friendly, fun social for all levels of play on the same weekend that the new Magic set releases. Launch Parties feature leagues, booster drafts, and other formats that allow players to experience the newest Magic set.
You will receive a Launch Party prize support kit two weeks before your event. The kit will include forty-eight promo cards, twenty-four alternate art prints, eight deck-boxes, five open-dueling cards, one poster, and one information document.
The rare Magic participation promo card will drive players to your location on the day of the event. Launch Parties are very flexible; choose the day that is best for you and your players. Friday: October 3rd or Saturday: October 4th or Sunday: October 5th. To sign up for the Shards of Alara Launch party you simply need to schedule your event with us online.
If you are already familiar with procedures on how to sanction events under the DCI, nothing is immediately changing. We are developing new application forms for 2009. If you are new to scheduling events the tournament organizer information center has detailed information that you’ll be directed to after signing up.
(Please note that these pages have NOT been updated to reflect the new Wizards Play Network Levels.)
If you are already familiar with scheduling (sanctioning) a tournament, then you know how easy it is.
D&D Delve Night
D&D Delve Night is a monthly dungeon crawl adventure that is separated into four encounters. Each encounter takes about 1-2 hours to complete. The encounters are meant to be played one per week, or as often as the organizer and DM agree to run them. Each encounter is displayed on a full-color cardstock sheet with all the information needed to DM the session right on the sheet. Players simply show up with characters of the appropriate level (or create them onsite) and jump right into the action!
As an organizer, this is a great way to have a weekly D&D game without a large time commitment. The session can be played on a weeknight or you can play a longer session on the weekend using more than one encounter. As a DM, everything you need to run the adventure is on the sheet; just bring some Dungeon Tiles and D&D Miniatures and you’re ready to go. As a player, you can get a weekly game of D&D in without having to worry about scheduling time with a group – simply show up at your play location with the appropriately leveled character (or make one onsite) and you’re ready to go.
Friday Night Magic
Friday Night Magic (FNM) is run in over 1,000 locations around the world every week, and is one of the most-recognized and popular Magic: The Gathering Wizards Play Network programs.
FNM will attract both new and experienced players to your location. For every FNM tournament you sanction with the DCI in a month you will receive four complementary foil Magic prize cards. Two prize cards are awarded to the top-2 finishers and two cards are awarded to two random players that did not finish in the top-2. There will be new foil Magic promo cards available for each month.
Magic Prereleases
For a player perspective on Prereleases, see Steve Sadin’s article, “Pumped for the Prerelease”.
All Core level and higher Wizards Play Network Organizers are eligible to host a Shards of Alara Worldwide Prerelease. Preleases will provide your Magic: The Gathering players with a friendly, fun, social event that appeals to new and current Magic players one week before the new Magic set releases. The Shards of Alara Prerelease Tournament and Open Dueling will be the two key formats associated with all Prereleases.
Prereleases will run Saturday: September 27th or Sunday: September 28th, six days before the new Magic set releases. As an organizer, you will receive a Prerelease prize support kit two weeks before your event. The kit will include twenty-four participation promo cards; twenty-four launch party flyers, twelve table numbers, five open dueling cards, twenty-four scorepads, twenty-four pens, twenty-five DCI cards, one poster, and one information document. The rare Magic participation promo card will drive players to your location the day of the event. Each kit also entitles you to a complimentary display of Magic boosters for prize and tournament volunteer support. Your prize boosters will be sent to your location along with your operational product.
Applying for a prerelease
- To be eligible for applying for a Magic Prerelease you must be a Core-Level WPN organizer.
- You must schedule/sanction your event online.
- You must also have a means to obtain product from a distributor (usually requiring a Business License and Resale Tax Certificate depending upon local legal restrictions) already. As part of the application process you will be asked to identify which distributor you have an account with and some account information. We will use this information to notify your distributor that you are permitted to receive a limited amount of product in advance of the on-sale date. The amount of product available will be determined based upon prior prerelease attendance, average overall tournament size, and some adjustment for largest tournament size.
Very Important Notes
- All complementary prize/volunteer support boosters must be disseminated as instructed by the end of your Prerelease.
- Please remember that continued participation depends on following DCI policies, reporting your event, and respecting the publicized release dates of Wizards of the Coast’s products.
We hope that you find the new Wizards Play Network offerings exciting opportunities to offer your play groups and bolster your business. If you have questions or comments please email us at dci@wizards.com.
Our next announcement will be near October 1st and include information on support kits including prize support for Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.
