Diplomacy and Daggers
By JD Wiker and Steve Miller
The New Jedi Order is a big topic to cover, so it's no wonder that the designers of The New Jedi Order Sourcebook couldn't cram everything they wanted to say between the covers. But we're proud to bring you some of that extra material right here, along with previews of what you will see in the book. Our first installment looked at the ExGal Society of researchers, who perch on the rim of the known galaxy, waiting for signs of life from beyond. Our second installment divulged the details on the grutchin and the Kor Chokk, two more weapons in the Yuuzhan Vong arsenal of destruction.
And now in this third and final installment, we present archetypes of fledgling New Republic senators and the Noghri bodyguards of Leia Organa Solo. Archetype: New Republic Senator
With the end of the Galactic Empire, the fledgling New Republic needed leaders. The best and most dedicated administrators from the systems freed of Imperial control stepped forward to accept the challenge. Together, they would guide the New Republic through the inevitable growing pains of an infant democratic government.
The 8th-level diplomat is advanced in both his political career and his age, and his influence has spread accordingly. The 12th-level diplomat is among the oldest and wisest senators, and most are exclusively members of Borsk Fey'lya's ruling council. Not coincidentally, half of these are non-Humans: Niuk Niuv of Sullust, Triebakk of Kashyyyk, and Pwoe, a Quarren from Mon Calamari. Triebakk is the only councilor who shows sympathy toward the goals of the Jedi. Of the Humans on the ruling council -- Cal Omas of Alderaan, Chelch Dravvad of Corellia, and Fyor Rodan of Commenor -- only Omas actively supports the Jedi, with Rodan actively opposing them, and Dravvad reserving judgment for the time being.

Archetype: Noghri Bodyguard
The bodyguards of Leia Organa Solo and her family are the most dedicated of the Noghri people. Noghri bodyguards have undergone extensive training and testing for the honor of serving the Mal'ary'ush, the daughter of Darth Vader. Leia occasionally assigns Noghri to protect important people within the New Republic, but many bodyguards accept these assignments only to prove themselves worthy of guarding Lady Vader. To the Noghri, this is a sacred duty, and they do not allow themselves to be bribed or blackmailed into failing it.
Although Leia's Noghri bodyguards are trained in the use of a variety of weapons, they rarely carry more than a few daggers, trusting the environment to provide additional weapons when needed. The Noghri blade is a mark of honor, well balanced for hand-to-hand combat or for use as a thrown weapon.
The 8th-level archetypal bodyguard has been honored with the chance to learn the fundamentals of his profession, but he still has a lot to learn. By volunteering to guard a hero of the New Republic, he hopes to distinguish himself. The 10th-level Noghri bodyguard is qualified to serve with elite units, such as the military strike team that scouts out Ithor, but he still works hard to master his skills. The 12th-level Noghri is worthy of serving the Skywalker and Solo families. As such, he is a typical example of the caliber of hero capable of protecting the Mal'ary'ush herself.
