Judge Emeritus Sheldon Menery is one of the original progenitors of the Commander format, and despite being around the format forever he still finds new Commander decks to build using the wide card pool. His weekly column often sees him unveiling new and unique decks, and this time around he has a special theme: professional player Brian Kibler. Kibler is affectionately known as The Dragonmaster, and after his recent win at Pro Tour Dark Ascension, Sheldon decided to make a Commander deck in his honor!
The result? A cavalcade of Dragon power! Filled with ramp to accelerate quickly, this Commander deck is packed to the gills scales with dragon-themed cards. Once you have deployed your acceleration, any number of gigantic Dragons could drop on your opponent's head. Everything from the ancient Invasion dragon Darigaaz, the Igniter to the brand-new Dark Ascension Moonveil Dragon make an appearance.
Plenty of Dragon helpers fill out the deck, including Dragon Breath, Dragon Fangs, and Dragon Shadow. Even the planeswalkers are appropriately Dragon-themed: the dragon-crazy Sarkhan Vol and the much more literally dragon-crazy Sarkhan the Mad!
Building a Commander deck around an actual person seems like a fun exercise! Who is someone you can think of who would be fun to build a deck around? A celebrity, politician, or even another Magic player could make for a fun theme! Take a note from Commander founder Sheldon and give this unique exercise a try!
