hile testing for Pro Tour Gatecrash I tried to build a Prime Speaker Zegana deck in Standard. I put a deck together and played a game against Jund. My opponent played Olivia Voldaren on turn four and I picked up my deck, set it aside, and asked to play a different match. I never picked up the Zegana deck again.
That's not a great testing habit, but it is a true story.
Well, to clarify, it's good to not waste time on an idea that isn't going anywhere; the part that was bad was giving up on an entire strategy so easily. I set the deck aside because it had no answer to Olivia and I knew that a creature deck that couldn't beat Olivia wouldn't be an option. Obviously, I could have just tried to find a way to let my deck beat Olivia instead.
Today's deck might not be great against Olivia but it doesn't just concede, and, more importantly, it has answers to creatures in general. The real problem with my Prime Speaker Zegana deck was that it didn't.
Splicing the Izzet Staticaster/Nightshade Peddler engine gives the deck access to the ability to kill lots of creatures, and the card draw in the deck should make it easy to find the combo. I mentioned that this combo is relatively weak against Olivia anyway, since an opponent can just kill the Peddler if he or she has two mana up, but this deck is prepared with both Detention Sphere and Slayer of the Wicked(!) in the sideboard.
As I indicated yesterday, I think Gyre Sage isn't played enough in Standard, and this would be a great place for it. There's no shortage of creatures to evolve it or useful ways to spend a lot green mana. It can even power an insane Bonfire of the Damned.
