The letter T!wo weeks ago, I wrote about a Dimir mill deck in Standard to use the new guild. It was just built to show off a new strategy, but after writing it, I became seriously curious about the deck's competitive potential.

I physically put the deck together and tuned and updated it in early consideration for Pro Tour Gatecrash. After Brian Bruan-Duin's success with a graveyard-based deck in the StarCityGames.com Open in Atlanta, I felt that I had to give up on the deck due to an extreme weakness to Rest in Peace. It remains an exceptionally fun deck to play, so I thought I should share my latest version.

Mind Sculpt, Jace's Phantasm, and Wight of Precinct Six have impressed me, but Lazav, Dimir Mastermind is too restrictive on the mana, because I want to play Nephalia Drownyard. Duskmantle Guildmage is pretty awesome, and I won some games by dealing 20 with Jace, Memory Adept or 14 with Mind Sculpt, but, ultimately, I think it's just too slow for competitive Standard.

Meanwhile, I realized that all the mill spells power Deathrite Shaman, which you can tap for mana, which is unusual and extremely powerful in Standard. Vampire Nighthawk is an excellent way to buy time while your better creatures power up.

If I were to play the deck in the future, it would look something like this:
