Memories of The North
By Jim Butler

You wouldn't believe the late nights and weekends spent making The North boxed set what it was. Game designer slade spent his time scanning and expanding the materials we had previously published. Meanwhile, as the product's editor, I put out the call for help. We needed fun, new stuff to make the boxed set more than merely a compilation of what had gone on before. Editors Julia Martin, Cindi Rice, Steven Schend, and I spent those long nights adding to the history, detailing the gods, and otherwise updating the older materials. It was another of those TSR Team efforts that resulted in a big success.

The North boxed set represents the very heart of the Forgotten Realms. Providing DMs and players all that they need to know about the area, it's an invaluable reference tool that's been out of print for far too long. I'm very pleased to offer it to you over the website, and hope that you enjoy your tour of the North.

Until Swords Part...

Jim Butler, Brand Manager
Forgotten Realms campaign setting

The heart of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting lies in the frozen tundra of the northern plains. Icewind Dale, Waterdeep, Neverwinter, Baldur's Gate, Silverymoon. These and other cities are the launching points for countless adventures over the years, ranging from the depths of political intrigue to the bloody fight for survival to escape the depths of Hellgate Keep.

As an integral part of the Realms, understanding the harsh mountains and plains of the North is essential to both players and Dungeon Masters. Take some time now to download one of the most exciting and comprehensive descriptions of the lands of the Savage Frontier.

Written by slade (along with help from Jim Butler, Cindi Rice, Julia Martin, and Steven Schend), The North boxed set was published in 1996. This PDF file includes the contents of that entire box: approximately 238 pages of stories, characters, artwork, and maps. The key parts of the product are:

  • The Wilderness: A timeline and geographical overview of the North, featuring a description of the land's natives, gods, and monsters.
  • Cities and Civilization: Background information about the cities, towns, and hamlets of the Barbaric North.
  • Daggerford: The city of Daggerford, complete with poster map, detailed NPCs, and random encounter tables.
  • Two poster maps that detail the North and surrounding areas.
