Model Tactics
Chainmail Set 2: Dwarf Ranger
By Bruce R. Cordell and Rob Heinsoo

Model: Dwarf Ranger

Faction: Mordengard

Why It Rocks: The Dwarf Ranger excels in vaulted subterranean chambers and terrain-heavy battlefields. He provides his warband with a hefty scouting check, helping ensure that you fight on a battlefield of your choosing.

Tricks and Tactics: In many cases, the Dwarf Ranger is part of a Mordengard warband of dwarves, and dwarves mean slow. If you can win the scouting check (with help from the Dwarf Ranger), use your high walls (you brought high walls to the table as part of your terrain choice, didn’t you?) to minimize the damage you’ll suffer due to your lack of speed. The best placement for your high wall in most scenarios is just across the center of the battlefield, so you can advance for the center under cover and, at the same time, force your enemies to come around to you (and the center).

The Dwarf Ranger is a mixed bag -- a commander, as well as a model with an extra melee attack. The extra melee attack turns his "OK" combat ability into something not half bad -- once a melee starts, the Dwarf Ranger can maneuver himself into a position to get into melee (hopefully against an enemy already engaging one of your primary melee troops). Even one round using the extra melee attack almost ensures one hit.

Enemies Who Hate to See It: Warbands made up primarily of archers hate to see two or more Dwarf Rangers in the warband, since they often rely on winning the scouting check to gain advantageous terrain. With a Dwarf Ranger or two, you can break the best-laid plans of missile troops.
