You’ve got questions—we’ve got answers! Here’s how it works—each week, our Community Manager will be scouring all available sources to find whatever questions you’re asking. We’ll pick three of them to answer, whether about the about the making of the game, the technical workings of our DDI studio, or anything else you care to know about… with some caveats.

There are certain business and legal questions we can’t answer (for business and legal reasons). And if you have a specific rules question, we’d rather point you to Customer Service, where representatives are ready and waiting to help guide you through the rules of the game. That said, our goal is provide you with as much information we can—in this and other venues.

1 Are there any plans to make Essentials versions of setting-specific classes, like the swordmage and artificer?

Not currently. We feel that the swordmage and artificer are both well-served in their current designs. We’ve considered creating variations on them, but their reliance on magic makes the at-will, encounter, daily, and utility powers structure suit them fine. Furthermore, neither class has a natural tendency toward the sort of flavor that helped guide the design of the hexblade. In the hexblade’s case, it made sense to limit encounter powers to the pact weapon. We’d need to see a similar flavor link for other classes to use that approach for their encounter powers.

2 Will you ever create a program or release materials to assist home campaigns in the way that Encounters promotes in-store play?

We already have such a program. The Living Forgotten Realms campaign has released over 100 adventures playable at conventions, game days, stores, or at home. A small army of dedicated administrators keeps the campaign running and provides a steady stream of new content. 3 Have you abandoned support for epic tier play? The Monster Vault had few epic monsters, and Dungeon has had almost no epic content since the end of Scales of War.

Epic tier support is tricky because we consistently see a preference for lower levels. Of course, that’s no comfort if you want higher level material. I believe (editor’s note: this question was answered by Mike Mearls) one of the biggest hurdles we have is figuring out precisely what material will be most useful for high level play. If we could maximize the utility of the epic content we produce, that will certainly make everyone happy. We’ll have a poll at the end of this article about this topic, and also send your ideas to or discuss them in the forums.
