Heroes of the Feywild Excerpts
Bart Carroll

A nd welcome to the start of our previews for Heroes of the Feywild! Let’s start with the very basic of the book, shall we? For those of you not familiar with the product page already, here are the main details:

Player’s Option: Heroes of the Feywild
160 page hardcover; $29.95
Releases November 15, 2011

Heroes of the Feywild contains exciting new character builds and options that are thematically rooted to the Feywild, a wild and verdant plane of arcane splendor, full of dangerous and whimsical creatures. Characters who trace their origins or backgrounds to the Feywild gain access to unique feats, powers, and mechanics. The book explores what makes fey-themed characters so fun and distinct.

Now, for those interested in learning a bit more about the Feywild itself:

The Feywild, also sometimes called the land of Faerie, is a place bright with magic. Those who wander its enchanted roads discover miracles and wonders undreamed of in the mortal world. In the Feywild, the laws of science, logic, and reason defer to the arts of magic, story, and rhyme. Ordinary animals and objects converse as eloquently as any worldly mortal. Enchanted forests wander across the landscape like herds of roving sheep. Glorious castles perch on mountain spires that touch the starry heavens, and a bold traveler can board a vessel to a fey palace on the moon. Fairies anoint the dewdrops on morning flowers, and in the evening, satyrs play their gentle pipes to lull the world to sleep.

Yet for all its dreamlike splendor, the plane can be as perilous as the Elemental Chaos with its random explosions of stone and fire, and as deadly as the life-sapping Shadowfell. Here wicked hags place everlasting curses on their enemies, change mortals into toads, and blacken the moon in their flight across the midnight sky. Capricious fey play careless games with mortal lives. Underground caverns sprawl the length of the world above, and in these dark places, fomorian tyrants, brutal cyclopses, and hateful drow await the day when they will overthrow the surface dwellers. Those who are drawn to this realm of enchantment and danger must take care, for wonders and horrors beyond imagining lie around every bend in the woodland road.

For the rest of our previews, you can look forward to the following:

Races: Three new races have already were announced for the book at this year’s Gen Con: the hamadryad, the pixie, and the satyr. We’ve shown you a cursory look at the pixie in the latest In the Works. Look for a deeper preview, this time of the satyr.

Classes: Likewise, we teased something of the witch. We’ll offer a full preview of this subclass, along with some sample spells.

Themes: The third component to best define your character after race and class, we’ll look at the fey beast tamer theme. Master of fey creatures, this theme allows you to control feral creatures from the Feywild. Ever want your own owlbear? Of course, who hasn’t!

Items: It’s said that in the Feywild, magic is so common that extraordinary items imbued with a small amount of magic can seem ordinary to that realm’s inhabitants. We’ll present both Feywild gear and magic items, as well as some of the fey magic gifts you might bestow upon characters.

Story: The Feywild is a realm of stories, folk tales, and legends. More than any other plane, the realm of the fey has a way of rearranging the lives of mortals, creating heroes from the lowest peasants and casting down the most privileged of nobles. We’ll walk through a sample background creation for your characters, to give them the kind of story they deserve!

Throughout our previews, we’ll also show off much of the book’s evocative art—much of which tells stories of their own. For example, let’s follow the tale of Viltham and Rowena, as they search for the ever-blooming rose (from artist Eric Belisle):

VILTHAM is using his wand to magically create a sound that distracts a prowling DISPLACER BEAST. He and ROWENA are adventuring in the RUINS OF CENDRIANE. Rowena is in her cat form, which has a color similar to her hair and has blue eyes like her.

ROWENA is negotiating with a SATYR OF NIGHT, who is guarding the EVER-BLOOMING ROSE. Meanwhile, VILTHAM is sneaking around to take the rose. They are in a chamber in the RUINS OF CENDRIANE.

ROWENA and VILTHAM arrive in the city of MITHRENDAIN. The city’s eladrin residents look on as they bring the EVER-BLOOMING ROSE through the street.
