Playtest Group of the Month
(December)

By Kim Mohan, Playtest Coordinator

Our Group of the Month "tour" started in California, went to Colorado, and now moves farther east to Tennessee. Rob Lee, head DM of the Nashville Roleplaying Guild, did a marvelous job of organizing and transmitting thousands of words of feedback that he and the other members of the group came up with. One of my clearest memories of working with Rob's group is their willingness to tell us what they liked about the new rules in addition to what they didn't like. The designers appreciate hearing positive feedback as well as the other kind-not just because they like getting praise, but because it helps to know what parts of the system are the most popular.

The upbeat attitude that Rob and his fellow gamers had all throughout the project is evident in what Rob wrote when I asked him for his general impressions of the playtest process:

My Thoughts on Playtesting

By Rob Lee

Playtesting the 3rd Edition DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game has been a huge thrill for all of us. Everyone at Wizards of the Coast has been helpful, understanding, and professional during the past year. My players and I were pleased when we began e-mailing suggestions and opinions that were actually being taken seriously. The designers at WotC have really listened to what the playtesters are saying. Certain rules and even entire chapters have been rewritten due to the opinions or arguments of the playtesters. We have updated our character sheets at least 5 times due to major rules changes and each time has made for a better gaming experience. The new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game is going to be the best roleplaying game ever released for one reason. The players are saying what they want, and the designers are listening. As for us, we're just happy to be part of roleplaying history.

Quote of the Week:

"We are all very happy that the designers are making a huge effort to keep the game balanced and challenging for high level PCs. I have always felt that the system kinda broke down after 10th level, but after looking at the new monster format (actually using ability bonuses and classes to full potential) and a few other rules that make high level gaming more exciting and easier, I can't wait to see the PCs reach some really high levels."
