Playtest
Group of the Month
(April)

By
Kim Mohan, Playtest Coordinator
David
Darnells playtest group is noteworthy for a couple
of reasons: Most of them have been playing the D&D
game for upwards of twenty yearsand theyve
got a list of accomplishments that proves theyre
very good at what they do.
For
instance, at the 1999 Gen ConŽ Game Fair, members of
the Virginia Role Players Association won awards for
best overall RPGA judge, best Living City judge, 4th
best Living City judge, and an RPGA service award.
As
youll see from some of the biographical information
Davids group members supplied, the nucleus of
this group has been together for quite a long time.
I appreciated the perspective these veteran players
were able to give us.

Our
Thoughts on 3E
By
Tim Joslin
The
biggest problem3E has fixed is how much easier it will
now be to teach a new person how to play. With 2e, most
new players were dependent on friendly players and GMs
to see them through the mechanics, often leaving them
more concerned about what dice they should be rolling
instead of what their character should be doing. 3E
will permit new players to feel much more involved very
early in their playing career, allowing them to concentrate
more on their character and the campaign and less on
the mechanics of play.

Quote
of the Week:
|
In
the 2nd Edition AD&D game, a combat round
is 1 minute long. In the new rules, its
6 seconds. When we asked playtest groups what
they thought of the change, heres how
David responded:
"Combat is not a matter of time. Each round
is not a second, minute or hour. A round is
a construct to allow combat to move in a reasonably
ordered fashion. Go see an SCA event with combat.
Each "round" is usually over in less
than 3 seconds."
