The Jedi's Last Stand

The end of the Jedi Order is coming in Star Wars Episode III. The new Star Wars Trading Card Game expansion set Revenge of the Sith, released on April 2, 2005, has given players many interesting cards to fight that epic final battle.

Revenge of the Sith is the first set to have new Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader cards in the same set. This fact makes for exciting deckbuilding. Does anyone dare run any copies of Anakin Skywalker for fear of contesting his evil alter ego, or can Vader keep his confused yet heroic side at bay? Also, Vader's Master, Darth Sidious, is a monster in his own right, with three very powerful versions that can burn through many deck types. What can the heroes of the Republic do to ward off the evil Sith?

No one in the Republic is more of a hero than a Jedi. Jedi Swarm decks have been very popular in the days of Attack of the Clones and Sith Rising. Using old-school cards such as Recognition of Valor and many of the Jedi units from the first two Star Wars TCG sets, we get a feel for the power of the Jedi. Adding new Jedi units such as Coruscant Shuttle and Venator-Class Destroyer lends new flavor to the Jedi theme, along with some Mission-type abilities built into them. Great Battle cards such as Lightsaber Quick Draw and Dismiss help the Jedi units execute their duties in an efficient manner.

However, this deck's power comes from the hammers Even Piell (A) and Kashyyyk System. Hammers? That's right -- combined with the Mission card Well-Earned Meal, you can use your Force to increase a unit's power or retaliate. If successful, you can gain back all the Force you used for the attack.

This deck has strength in all three arenas, but each has some play differences.

Space Arena

Though the Jedi starfighters aren't the fastest units, they gain speed from R2-D2 (G) and the handful of ready Jedi pilots. The great thing about the arena is that Kashyyyk System combined with Well-Earned Meal can make attacking your Jedi a truly painful thing. Lastly, the Even Piell (A)/Well-Earned Meal combo is best for delivering punishing attacks that, if successful, gain some or all of that Force back.

Ground Arena

The Even Piell (A)/Well-Earned Meal combo works in this arena as well. Coruscant Shuttle, when deployed, can fetch a Jedi card, but which is the best choice? In most cases, you should fetch Even Piell (A), since he dynamically affects all three arenas, or a high-speed card for Lightsaber Quick Draw.

Jedi Heroes and Elite Jedi Squad do most of the damage in the Ground Area. Rounding out the arena is Lightsaber Quick Draw, which lets you do 4 dice of damage to all your opponent's units in the arena based on the speed of a revealed card. That helps clear the arena of any Dark Side ground swarms and can benefit from Well-Earned Meal.

Character Arena

The Even Piell (A)/Well-Earned Meal and Lightsaber Quick Draw both work here. The Character arena is filled with many Jedi, from Luke to Yoda. The new Yoda (J) has a cool deck-cycling ability when you attack him. Plenty of pilots and the Hidden Cost Luke Skywalker (O) is a nice surprise. In the end, any combo of these Jedi can serve as the heroes of the Republic or run in fear of the Sith -- you make the call.
