Round 5: Eric Froehlich vs. Tom Van de Logt
Worlds is definitely a good tournament for Tom Van de Logt. He made Top 8 at Brussels, and followed up by winning the whole thing last year in Toronto. Eric Froehlich is no slouch either, and has had a breakout season this year. Widely considered to be the hottest player in America at the moment due to his consistent finishes, he has an added advantage in this tournament thanks to being a part of the Magic Colony. Testing for about a month straight is likely to have its advantages, but this week will prove if the theory actually works. Game 1
Froehlich now improved his board position, flashing back Call of the Herd and attacking into Van de Logt's Nightscape Familiar. This allowed Van de Logt to Cunning Wish for Fire/Ice, and take out Flametongue Kavu and Llanowar Elves. Repulse bounced away an elephant token, and Froehlich was suddenly left with only a Brushhopper on offense. The other Call was flashed back, but Van de Logt had Circular Logic. Van de Logt incorrectly tapped his black sources, which made Froehlich's Fire/Ice on Nightscape Familiar critical, and it had to be Counterspelled. This left Van de Logt with no cards in hand, but he topdecked a pair of Flametongue Kavus to win the game. Froehlich- 0 Van de Logt- 1 Game 2Llanowar Elves accelerated Froehlich right out the gate, and was followed by Wild Mongrel. Phantom Centaur was Memory Lapsed, and countered with Circular Logic the second time. After a few attacks Repulse bounced the Mongrel, and Van de Logt summoned Psychatog to stop the beats. The Mongrel came back into play, and Van de Logt cast Duress on his turn. Froehlich was a bit stunned and asked, "Who does that?" and saw a hand of two Fire/Ice, Global Ruin, and Flametongue Kavu. Naturally, the World Champion made Froehlich discard the Armageddon-type spell. Fact or Fiction presented Van de Logt with Fact or Fiction and three lands or Flametongue Kavu, and he gladly took the four card pile. Van de Logt already had a Flametongue waiting in his hand, and Froehlich lamented, "I wish I could (Global) Ruin you right now so badly."
Final Result: Froehlich- 0 Van de Logt- 2
