Quarterfinals: William Jensen vs. Gabriel Nassif

William Jensen, or "Baby Huey" like most people know him, was running a Kibler creation. Gigantic fliers that cost a bajillion to cast and in general just fat creatures. He had to face Gabriel Nassif's goblins in the quarterfinals, and it would prove to be an interesting match. Gabriel won the flip and chose to start.

Game 1

Gabriel came out slower than expected with just a Goblin Sledder and Goblin Grappler in his first three turns. They started beating down on William who spent his first three turns just playing land and morphing an Exalted Angel. The Angel fell to a cycled Gempalm Incinirator. The tiny goblins took the American down to 16 on Gabriel's fourth turn but a Goblin Goon joined the army. William tried to stop the bleeding with a Windborn Muse. Gabriel attacked with just the Goblin Goon on his next turn and summoned a Piledriver. William cast a Ravenous Baloth on his next turn, but Gabriel already had an answer ready. A Threaten on the Muse and provoking the Baloth would mean that William was going to receive lethal damage for sure.

Game 2

As William got to play first this game, the threat of being overrun by the little red men was quite a bit lower. Still Gabriel came out with two Goblin Grapplers on his first two turns but William had a morph on his second turn. Gabriel had no way to kill it so he just had to pass his third turn doing nothing. The morph turned out to be a Daru Sanctifier as William played Explosive Vegetation rather than unmorphing his guy. Gabriel attempted to increase pressure with a Clickslither but it only brought William down to 16.

An Exalted Angel came down next for William. At a healthy life total this must have been a good feeling. Gabriel cycled a Gempalm Incinerator on the morph, which indeed was the Sanctifier and brought William down to 13 with his Clickslither. The Exalted Angel hit the Red Zone and a Windborn Muse joined its ranks. Gabriel played out a gigantic flier of his own in Rorix Bladewing but it was pacified on William's next turn. The subsequent attack brought Gabriel down to 7 life. Akroma, Angel of Wrath finished it off on William's next turn.

Game 3

Gabriel saw his first turn Goblin Sledder answered by a second turn Broodhatch Nantuko. The Nantuko made an Insect after Gabriel cycled his Gempalm Incinerator on it and played out a Goblin Piledriver on his next turn. It was pacified next turn but Gabriel still got in some beatings when he cycled a second Gempalm Incinerator on the Insect. A Windborn Muse was added to the American's defenses but Sparksmith was Gabriel's answer. The Muse got in some beats and William cast Explosive Vegetation to accelerate his game a bit. Gabriel brought down the Windborn Muse next turn and destroyed the Pacifism by morphing and unmorphing a Nantuko Vigilante. Akroma's Vengeance swept the board next turn. Gabriel then cast Menacing Ogre.

William: "Oh you're not winning the Ogre battle; I play poker!"

Gabriel: "Well if you write down your number face up like some other players I might."

Gabriel won the bid two to one and the Ogre took down William to 8. It was pacified next turn and cast a Ravenous Baloth. Another Ogre came down and once again Gabriel won the bid, this time three to one. William's Akroma, Angel of Wrath was once again there to finish the Frenchman off, who went down to 8 from the bid.

Gabriel 1 – William 2

Game 4

Gabriel muttered some French curses as he traded in his first two hands. His hand even then was only mediocre. A second turn Sparksmith and third turn Gempalm Incinerator wasn't exactly blazing fast. William on the other hand only played and cycled cycling lands during his first four turns. Unable to really punish the slow start, Gabriel added a Goblin Sledder to his legion of Goblins, bringing William down to 12. After that, a Ravenous Baloth came down but it died to the Sparksmith after another Sparksmith came down. Explosive Vegetation signaled the beginning of the end for Gabriel, who stopped playing land as of his fourth turn. He was holding Rorix Bladewing and Menacing Ogre, enough to finish William off but unable to cast them. Akroma's Vengeance cleared the board but the Ogre came down to deliver some beatings. Gabriel won the bid two to zero and brought William down to three. The American had the choice between playing out Akroma or two Windborn Muses, choosing for the latter. Gabriel only could attack with the Ogre and it killed one of the muses after they double blocked. Akroma, Angel of Wrath came down and finished the Frenchman off in two turns.
