Fan Deck Check: PsyWave Deck

By Dark Master Trainer Mike

Adam has made a Light Draggy/Espeon deck for us to look at. Adam has not said which Espeon he is using from Neo Discovery but we are hoping it is the Lv. 45 one. So, let's see what Gengar and I can do to help this deck out.

Deck Type: You can use this deck in Modified play.

Adam's Description: Hi, Mike. [Gengar says, "They always say hi to you but almost never to me!"]

This deck I've submitted is probably the best deck I've ever built; it has two of the strongest colors, a fairly even share of each type of cards, and, most important of all, it kicks butt!

The strategy of the PsyWave deck is to get the best attackers (Light Dragonite, Espeon, and Elekid) up and running, and to make the opponent bow down to my victory. I realized that it was at least worth attacking with the Miraculous Wind power of Light Dragonite since Light Wave prevents any effects of attacks other than damage done to Light Dragonite on my opponent's next turn. But I think that 40 damage is not very competitive, so to back the Light Dragonite up I threw in Espeon and Elekid, which can both deal out very decent amounts of damage and sometimes from very decent places (Elekid attacks from the Bench). To finish it off I threw in Cleffa because no deck can live without Cleffa!

Now the Trainers weren't too difficult to get together since 12 of them are either card-drawing or deck-searching cards. Town Volunteers brings back Pokémon, Switch saves my neck, Focus Band gives my Pokémon one last lifeline to dish out some damage, and Double Gust resets both of the Active Pokémon's positions before I get ready to attack.

The Energy was simple. I put in 10 Psychic Energy for all cards except the Light Dragonite chain, and Boost Energy is a 1-turn power-up for Light Dragonite. With Miraculous Wind on, I can attach another Boost Energy to a Basic Pokémon (when Light Dragonite is Active), I can retreat Light Dragonite with Boost Energy (when Light Dragonite is Active), and I can keep Boost Energy attached to Light Dragonite until he's Knocked Out (when Light Dragonite is . . . okay, enough of that joke).

Well, I think that the strengths of this deck are that it has very powerful colors (two of the strongest, I think), and it has a lot of draw power. The Eevee cards can evolve into Espeon quickly and it has very fast Pokémon that can hit for a lot of damage.

The weaknesses of this deck are that it can be harmed by other strong Psychic decks. Can you please give tips on how to make PsyWave deck even better? Before you finish reading this, let me tell you how this deck got its name: from a combination of Espeon's Psychic attack and Light Dragonite's Light Wave.

Thanks!

Tweaking the Deck

Hi, Adam! You have a pretty nice Light Dragonite/Espeon deck going there. It looks like a lot of the ones I have seen lately that are doing well in competition. Let's get to work. The first thing I noticed is that you have room for 3 more cards in this deck! It has only 57 cards in it, which is always good news!

The thing I think your deck needs is speed. The faster the deck the better. Since you can plop down your Boost Energy on the Light Dragonite as soon as you have it, we will want to get the Draggy going as soon as possible.

Pokémon: I'm going to take out 3 of your Light Dragonair cards. I like the rest of your choices, so that is my only fix there. Gengar says, "What? Are you totally daft? How can he evolve into Light Dragonite without those Light Dragonairs?"

Trainers: I'm adding cards here. First let's start with the speed you need. We are going to add 3 Pokémon Breeders here and 2 Pokémon Traders. This will make it possible to get your Light Dragonite going on turn 2 instead of waiting for turn 3! The Traders allow you to search for the Light Dragonite, and the Breeders allow you to go straight from Dratini to Light Dragonite!

Energy: I'm adding one more Psychic Energy here because I think you need it.

I'm not so worried about your Weakness to Psychic. Besides, the Espeon retreats for nothing. I might consider tweaking some of your search Trainers a bit. Perhaps I'd add something that can look for your Boost Energy cards, but overall I like what you have there. I think the Breeders and Traders will really help to speed this deck up.
