Fan Deck Check: Quit Cursing Already!

Dark Master Trainer Mike

Well, I'm always a sucker for a Gengar deck. I even have a Dark Gengar deck that is actually pretty close to this one! Let's take a look at it, shall we?

Deck Type: You can use this deck in Modified tournament play.

Quit Cursing Already!

Pokémon (20)
3 Eevee (Neo Discovery)
2 Dark Espeon (Neo Destiny)
1 Espeon (Neo Discovery)
1 Umbreon (Neo Discovery)
1 Gastly (Expedition)
3 Gastly (Neo Destiny)
1 Haunter (Expedition)
1 Haunter (Legendary Collection)
1 Gengar (Expedition)
3 Gengar (Legendary Collection)
3 Jynx (Legendary Collection)

Trainers (25)
3 Bill (Legendary Collection)
2 Challenge! (Legendary Collection)
3 Double Gust (Neo Genesis)
3 Gold Berry (Neo Genesis)
3 Pokémon Trader (Legendary Collection)
3 Pokémon Breeder (Legendary Collection)
3 Professor Elm (Neo Genesis)
3 Professor Elm's Training Method (Expedition)
2 Rocket's Hideout (Neo Revelation)

Energy (15)
3 Darkness (Expedition)
9 Psychic (Promo)
3 Rainbow (Promo)

Strengths: The deck attacks the Bench with Dark Espeon and Umbreon and causes your opponent to second guess where to place Energy cards. It effectively abuses Legendary Collection Gengar's Pokémon Power and provides a Hit and Run attack with Expedition set's Gengar to build up more damage. Jynx is an effective clean-up hitter that is assisted by using Curse to damage the Active Pokémon and then cursing it to the Bench.

Weaknesses: Legendary Muk and Magby can shut down the Curse Pokémon Power. Eevee's Weakness to Tyrogue can become an OHKO (one-hit KO) if no other Basic Pokémon are drawn.

Tweaking the Deck

Despite my love of Gengar decks, the problem I have always had with these decks is speed. The Fish has done a good job by putting in Pokémon Trader and Pokémon Breeder. These will really help get this deck going. I'm assuming that the Umbreon is the Feint attack one from Demetre Fish's description. Here is how I would change this deck and why.

Pokémon: First I would lose the Espeon. You have only 3 Eevee cards, in any case, and 4 Evolutions. I like the Jynx; it seems like a reasonable way to go. I really would like to add another Umbreon, as well, but then I think we should up the Eevee by 1 for the 4/4 ratio. Here is what I would suggest. First, remove the following:
1 Espeon (Neo Discovery)

I would add these Pokémon:
1 Eevee (Neo Discovery)
1 Umbreon (LV. 40) (Neo Discovery)
1 Cleffa (Neo Genesis)

Trainers: I never had any faith in Challenge! Go ahead and lose 'em. The 2 Rocket's Hideout cards help only 2 cards and are just not worth it. Here is how I would adjust the Trainers, starting with those I'd remove:
2 Challenge! (Legendary Collection)
2 Rocket's Hideout (Neo Revelation)

I would add this one:
1 Gold Berry (Neo Genesis)

Energy: Finally, I would add this card:
1 Darkness (Expedition)

Here is what the final deck looks like.

Quit Cursing Already!

Pokémon (22)
1 Cleffa (Neo Genesis)
4 Eevee (Neo Discovery)
2 Dark Espeon (Neo Destiny)
2 Umbreon (Neo Discovery)
1 Gastly (Expedition)
3 Gastly (Neo Destiny)
1 Haunter (Expedition)
1 Haunter (Legendary Collection)
1 Gengar (Expedition)
3 Gengar (Legendary Collection)
3 Jynx (Legendary Collection)

Trainers (22)
3 Bill (Legendary Collection)
3 Double Gust (Neo Genesis)
4 Gold Berry (Neo Genesis)
3 Pokémon Trader (Legendary Collection)
3 Pokémon Breeder (Legendary Collection)
3 Professor Elm (Neo Genesis)
3 Professor Elm's Training Method (Expedition)

Energy (16)
4 Darkness (Expedition)
9 Psychic (Promo)
3 Rainbow (Promo)

That is how I would give it a try, anyway. The problem with Gengar decks is balancing them. You really need to play them and tweak 'em to get it right; they are never highly competitive, but they do make for a fun deck! Thanks for the deck, Demetre Fish!
