Environmental Fortifications



Everyone's seen a castle or foreboding house on a cliff, waves crashing the rocks far below. There can be as much -- or more -- room underneath the cliff for winding passages and rooms containing secrets the owner doesn't want let out. This month, we have a four-level cliff complex that starts regularly enough but then becomes something more . . . .

08/26 Environment 4: Cold, desolate winds have gouged this bleak land into shards of hills that are only barely big enough to stand on -- except for two that hold enough adobe buildings to make a grim town. Download 72dpi JPG (128k)

08/12 Environment 2: This mansion is well protected by a high wall at the edge of its property. Beyond that, however, is a vast sea of barren wasteland that challenge any living thing that might try to cross it. By the time you reach the mansion, you're probably already dead.
