Aberrants are a favorite of any Dungeon Master -- who doesn't want a little invasion from the Far Realm once in a while? One of the most famous of all aberrants is back for this set. For those people who weren't able to get a Beholder miniature from Deathknell (released back in 2005), here's your chance again: the Beholder Eye Tyrant is one of the rares of the set.

One frequently requested aberrant over the history of the miniatures line is the Aboleth, and back when Logan made the set list in 2007, he made sure to put one in. The Aboleth Slime Mage is a visible uncommon miniature. We purposely went toward a dynamic half-flying version -- it reminds me of the Second from 3rd edition's Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. (That reminds me of another upcoming miniature of a prominent creature from that adventure, but I guess I should wait -- it's in the next set.)

I'm introducing a few themes that flow from set to set, and one introduced in this set is the Foulspawn collection. (No, they're not dinner plates.) By the end of the year, all three Foulspawn seen in the first Monster Manual will be done in miniature form. For this set we only have the common Foulspawn Grue, but more will be crossing through the gate before the end of the year.

The Berbalang comes back to D&D after hiding for a while. I'm not sure it's had a high-profile appearance since the 1st edition Fiend Folio. It's an interesting solo monster. Normally, I'd want a solo monster to be a rare miniature, but this creature summons duplicates of itself, so it's one of the few solos where you want multiple copies. The complexity of the miniature required it to be an uncommon in the set.

OK, I admit that I'm straying a bit from the aberrant theme of this preview. Eberron gets a little love in this set: the rare Xen'drik Drow Stingblade is a monster you'll find in the Eberron Campaign Setting being released later this year. It's my favorite of the Xen'drik drow miniatures, and I definitely see it also being used as a PC.

Next time -- a pair from a split race, a creation of the primordials, an infamous D&D monster that comes to 4e in Monster Manual 2, and a bug.
