Something big is coming. Something Huge.
War of the Dragon Queen, the upcoming release for the D&D Miniatures Game, lets you put Tiamat and her children right into your RPG or skirmish game. As a Huge set, each booster contains a Huge-sized miniature on a 3-inch circular base as well as seven other miniatures. The figures in this set are drawn from the a variety of sources, including not only the core books but also Monster Manual III, Races of the Dragon, and Red Hand of Doom, with a special emphasis on the upcoming Monster Manual IV.
Instead of looking in depth at some of this set's minis this time, I'd like to touch on some of the highlights of this set -- including some things I'll be addressing in greater detail in the coming weeks.
Huge Set, Take Two
The last Huge-sized miniatures set was Giants of Legend, which generated quite a bit of feedback regarding the rarity and distribution of the Huge minis. The cost to collect a set of Giants of Legend was significantly higher than a typical set, and the Rare Huge miniatures were hard to find. We've made some adjustments with War of the Dragon Queen to address these issues.
First off, the set has a total of 60 miniatures, comprised of 12 Huges, 18 Rares, 16 Uncommons, and 14 Commons. The Huge miniatures are divided into six Rares and six Uncommons, and a Huge Rare can be found in one out of three boosters. In addition to the Huge in the box, you'll also get a non-Huge Rare, two Uncommons, and four Commons.
This means that (in the best-case scenario), a collector needs to purchase only 18 boosters to get a complete set. Of course, with randomness, that collector would likely need to make a few trades to complete the set. (With Giants of Legend, 24 boosters were required for a shot at a set.) It also means that the customer who buys just a few boosters has a better chance of getting a Huge Rare.
Ever since the Star Wars Miniatures showed us that translucent lightsabers could be made, we've been working on implementing clear plastic in the D&D Miniatures game. War of the Dragon Queen marks the first set with clear plastic, used in a variety of ways. Some minis, such as the Storm Archer, have clear plastic as an accent (in this case, his weapon), while others are made entirely from clear plastic. Half a dozen figures in the set are at least partially clear. I'll show a couple of these in an upcoming article.
War of the Dragon Queen wouldn't be complete without dragons. More than a quarter of the minis in the set relate directly to dragons. In addition to the true dragons of various sizes, the set includes various Spawn of Tiamat. Hinted at in Races of the Dragon and briefly introduced in Red Hand of Doom, the Spawn of Tiamat are more fully fleshed out in Monster Manual IV. The spawn are dragonblood creatures created from the chromatic dragons and completely devoted to their Dragon Queen. With these new servants, Tiamat is poised to bring her war into the world.
In case you're wondering, three minis from this set help illustrate this article. The first is the business end of the (Huge Uncommon) Purple Worm, a chaotic creature that takes man-sized bites, delivers a devastating weakening poison, and enjoys crawls in the rain. Another Uncommon, 33-point-old bachelor number two isn't named Hank and can drop an energy-enhanced 15 points of damage twice per round at range. Finally, the Azer Fighter is on fire … or he is made of fire … or something. Watch out when this Common Azer hits an enemy, because you'll get burned if you're standing too close.
