Last week, we looked at some Eberron minis from War Drums. This week, I'll show you two more campaign-inspired miniatures, this time drawn from the Forgotten Realms.
The first is one of four unique creatures that have found their way into War Drums and the only one of the four to be drawn from recent fiction. He is also one of two miniatures from the chaotic evil faction that could claim a regal appellation, though the other's claim is suspect, at best. The second mini in this preview hails from Waterdeep, or at least from underneath it.
I know you're itching for details.
King Obould Many-Arrows
In Underdark, we gave you Artemis Entreri, the classic adversary of Drizzt Do'Urden. Once War Drums releases, Drizzt will need to contend with his newest nemesis, Obould, king of the orcs and chosen of the orc-god Gruumsh. King Obould stands in a regal pose, his flaming greatsword held before him, waiting to find an opponent worth his time and attention.
King Obould Many-Arrows is a fairly straightforward translation of the RPG stats that were printed on page 175 of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. A couple of mighty swipes each round from his flaming greatsword might be able to clear a path through enemy lines. As a Unique miniature, there can be only one King Obould in your warband, but he's also Domineering, which precludes the inclusion of any other commanders in your force. He isn't wearing impervious armor (far from it, actually), but even if he falls, his Death Strike lets him give his attacker one final "what-for." This version of Obould won't want to go toe-to-toe Drizzt -- a point-for-point comparison would need to involve around 20 more Chaotic Evil handicap points to even things out.
The King's a beefy commander with a moderate punch. By bringing a level of Tactics to Chaotic Evil, along with Commander 4, he could be the focus for a quick-hitting CE warband. Hail to the King!
How about a little undead? By little, I mean the smallest undead we've yet produced: the Flameskull. Technically, Flameskulls aren't directly tied to Skullport, underneath Waterdeep. In fact, as suggested in Lost Empires of Faerun, they can be encountered as guardians of treasure hoards or a spellcaster's trove, and are created from the skulls of recently slain humanoid spellcasters by way of a create undead spell. But by far the most famous of flameskulls soar through Skullport, a smuggling community deep within Undermountain.
These flaming and flying skulls offer reasonable support for a lawful evil warband. Because they are immune to three of the most common energy types and have Conceal 6, they have a reasonable chance to survive long enough to deliver their fireball. Unlike normal fireballs, the Flameskull's variety can only be centered on a target within 6 squares. Its fiery touch attack, also usable at range up to 6 squares away, has an almost guaranteed hit against any creature up to AC 20 -- for a paltry 5 fire damage.
It's undead, it flies, and it fireballs. What more could you ask, really? Other than stirges (we beg your patience on that one).
One thing you can't ask for is Attacks of Opportunity, because this is one of two minis in the set that has No Reach, preventing it from making such attacks (the other being the Arcane Ballista).
The Flameskull is a fun little piece, and I hope to get one of these Tiny Uncommon miniatures when we play our internal release event in March. Even better, I think he's a perfect proxy for Acererak the next time I run the Underground Place of Really Bad Things (aka the Tomb of Horrors).
