Snig the Axe
Recurring Villainy

Recurring villains are always fun for the DM, both because she gets to play the same, evil character for a long time, and because the recurring villain simultaneously frustrates and delights the players.

Presented here is a series of encounters that can be used with Snig the Axe (Archfiends, 38/50) as a recurring villain. The encounters range from EL 1 to EL 9. All of the encounters are built with D&D Miniatures using the standard RPG stats from their stat cards. In other words, while the PCs get tougher, Snig never does. He will be a 3 hit die monster in every encounter where he appears.

Snig, however, isn't the real mastermind of this operation. That honor goes to a Barghest. What it wants is entirely up to the DM -- use these as nuisance encounters, as comic relief, or as the basis for a nefarious, world-threatening plot.

Goblin Warriors, Goblin Skirmishers, and Hobgoblin Warriors are interchangeable without affecting the listed ELs. The same goes for Wolves and Hyenas (and for Bugbears and Large Monstrous Spiders, although you'll get a big change in atmosphere by swapping those).

Despite the ELs, remember that you're dealing with goblins here. No matter how many there are, they're pretty easy to kill individually. They should never attack piecemeal, and they should never bunch up into easy targets for area-effect spells. Ambushes, trickery, and favorable ground are hallmarks of goblin tactics.

As with any recurring villain, it's important to keep Snig alive (at least until the Barghest makes its appearance). Some reliable escape magic, such as a ring of teleport, invisibility, or freedom of movement, will help Snig to remain a thorn in the characters' sides through many encounters.
