Fleshcutter, Half-fiend Gargoyle Barbarian
By Robert Wiese

Design notes: This month I tried something new: adding classes to a monster that you think would not normally have classes. Given the limitations, barbarian was about the only reasonable choice (though ranger might have worked, too). Advancing the gargoyle made it a more impressive foe, plus the epic level feats and class levels really punch him up. In equipping Fleshcutter, I selected items that would not encumber it. This creature should add quite a little bit of excitement to your game.

The scent of torn flesh, the taste of fresh meat: These are the things that excite gargoyles, creatures who live to destroy. In theory, half-fiend gargoyles would possess even more of this bloodlust, and indeed that is the case with Fleshcutter. (Gargoyle names are very hard to pronounce in Common, so the creatures tend to acquire appellations or titles).

Fleshcutter is more than the average gargoyle, both in size and abilities (it was always smarter and wiser than most of its kin). It is a natural barbarian, a trait reflected in its class levels. It wanders the world feeding on humanity and other races. Though the monster possesses skills, it prefers carnage to subterfugeand so does not use them very often.

Fleshcutter likes to sit on buildings and choose its prey. Occasionally it stalks prey for days, but more often it moves immediately. It always attacks at night, when it can see far better than the prey usually can. The creature favors using a Flyby Attack to do damage while relying on Mobility (in versions where it has Mobility) to help avoid attacks of opportunity. It prefers lone opponents but doesn't hesitate to engage a small group of possible victims. Often it grabs a single opponent, carries the foe into the air, rips into him or her, then drops the victim from 50 or 60 feet. Fleshcutter also handles itself well in close melee, and rages as soon as possible.

Here we offer four versions of Fleshcutter for varied challenge levels: two versions suitable for characters of levels lower than 20 to face, and two versions for epic-level characters. The creature possesses magic items equivalent in value to what an NPC of its level should have.

* Feats not in the Player's Handbook:

Chaotic Rage (from Epic Level Handbook): Your rage is particularly damaging to lawful creatures. Any weapon you wield while in a rage is treated as a chaotic weapon (it deals +2d6 points of damage against creatures of lawful alignment). This doesn't stack with similar abilities (for instance, if the weapon is already a chaotic weapon). Prerequisites: Rage 5/day, chaotic alignment.
Epic Toughness (from Epic Level Handbook): You are preternaturally tough and gain +20 hit points. A character can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects stack.
Epic Will (from Epic Level Handbook): You gain a +4 bonus to all Will saving throws.

Extended Rage (from Masters of the Wild): Each of your rages lasts an additional 5 rounds beyond its normal duration.

Fast Healing (from Epic Level Handbook): You gain fast healing 3, or your existing fast healing rate increases by 3 points. This feat does not stack with fast healing rates granted by magic items or non-permanent magical effects.

Improved Flight (from Masters of the Wild): Your maneuverability improves by one grade. For example, a poor maneuverability becomes average.

Mighty Rage (from Epic Level Handbook): When you rage, you gain a +8 bonus to Strength and Constitution and a +4 morale bonus on Will saves. (These bonuses replace the normal rage bonuses.)

Terrifying Rage (from Epic Level Handbook): While you are raging, any enemies that view you must make a Will save opposed by your Intimidate check or become panicked (if they have fewer Hit Dice than you) or shaken (if they have Hit Dice equal to or up to twice yours) for 4d6 rounds.

**Magic Items not in the Dungeon Master's Guide:

Mantle of Epic Spell Resistance: This embroidered garment is worn over normal clothing or armor. It grants the wearer spell resistance of 40. Caster Level: 29th; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, Craft Epic Wondrous Item, spell resistance; Market Price: 290,000 gp. Weight: 1 lb.

Robert Wiese's love of gaming started in the Boy Scouts, where you'd think there would have been enough to do to keep one from playing roleplaying games. Through college he has played in some great home campaigns, and discovered the RPGA at a small game day in 1991. He worked for RPGA for six and a half years, filling almost every job duty that exists on the staff at one time or another. Now honorably retired from service as the RPGA Operations Manager, he lives in Nevada and writes gaming goodies from time to time.
