Battle of the (War)bands
It's week 4 of Battle of the Warbands -- time to select two Chaotic Evil commanders. But first, let's look back to last week's poll, asking for your LE commander choices:
Pit Fiend: 29.6%
Lord Soth: 22.5%
Snig the Axe: 10.4%
Human Blackguard: 7.8%
Red Wizard: 5.8%
Mordenkainen the Mage: 5.0%
Urthok the Vicious: 4.4%
The Chaotic Evil Candidates
This demon king has a lot going for him. He's a fast flyer with two big attacks, good immunities, and a command effect that can enslave enemies who fail morale. But he's expensive, costing nearly half your warband. Will he be able to handle the bulk of the fighting himself?
A mobile commander with a command effect that boosts low-level followers, the Drow Sergeant can occasionally contribute significant damage to the battle via her command effect. But the reason she's so attractive (aside from her striking dark features) is her cost. A trivial 16 points gets you this efficient Commander 2.
Eye of Gruumsh
There's nothing subtle about a huge, one-eyed orc with a double-axe. With two accurate attacks for massive damage, the Eye can dish out a lot of punishment, and his good speed ensures that punishment is delivered right where you need it. His commander effect makes an all-orc warband a fearsome thing.
Hill Giant Chieftain
Another fighting commander with good attacks and damage, this giant's Large Target Bonus ability makes him even more deadly against big creatures. And few creatures can match the damage of his ranged attack -- but then, few creatures are tossing boulders at the enemy.
Mordenkainen the Mage
Giants of Legend
Having run the gamut of factions for this poll, Mordy's appearance in CE should come as no surprise. His spells and command effect are as potent as ever, so Mordenkainen brings a lot to the table for CE warabands as well.
Snake's Swiftness is one of the best spells in the minis game, particularly in CE where beaters tend to hit painfully hard. This orc can cast it three times, allowing him to dramatically increase the damage output of your warband. As a druid, he can boost the animals and magical beasts in your band as well.
The all-time most frequently used commander for CE warbands is probably this reliable tiefling. Increasing the critical threat range for her followers while boosting their morale more than most other CE commanders means the captain contributes far more than her cost of a mere 21 points would suggest.
Vlaakith the Lich QueenWhich is your preferred CE commander?
It seems almost unfair that a caster with such powerful spells should also be so resilient in melee. The Queen's arsenal of disintegrate, fireball, and empowered electric orbs will make your opponent eager to destroy her, while her high AC and HP, immunities, DR, and paralyzing touch make that a difficult proposition.
