Creature Competition: Dragons
Selecting the Talent
02/28/2006 -- 03/06/2006

Last week, we asked you to vote on your favorite pseudodragon. The results are in, with Gan the Rusty moving on to the upcoming Creature Competition!

This week we’re daring the might of eight dracoliches, to find the one undead champion worthy of entering the competition. Perhaps in a state more terrifying than even “great wyrm”, these dragons have continued their pursuit of riches and power beyond life itself.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll be asking you to vote on your favorite entry within a given category (your favorite dracolich of the bunch, favorite brass dragon, etc.). Once we’ve narrowed the list of competitors, we’ll kick off the head-to-head bracket portion of the our Creature Competition: Year of Dragons!

Dracolich/Necromancers

Arilasadetonima: Silver Dragon Dracolich
Over the years, Ari became the watcher and defender of several humanoid families and societies which she befriended. Reaching the end of her impressively long lifespan, Ari looked for a means to continue her vigil. Emulating the elven baelnorns, she chose lichdom as the method for preserving her life. Sadly, the ritual did not work as planned, and her alignment fully changed to evil. Although she still feels protective of her own flock, she is harshly prejudicial towards anyone else and will destroy anyone who exhibits even the slightest threat or insult to her clan.

Aryntaranasara: Red Dragon Dracolich Sorcerer
Though she cares much less for the holding of territory and gold than most of her kin, Aryntaranasara hoards magical items—especially spellbooks and scrolls—in numbers unsurpassed by any wyrm... and purportedly even has obtained a number of powerful artifacts. Her lair is shrouded in so many layers of magical disguises and illusions that even most other dragons, liches, and dracoliches cannot locate it; the wards and mystic defenses around and within it are so powerful that a Dispassionate Watcher of Chronepsis once remarked that "even a demigod would think twice before trying to intrude upon it". Her ultimate aspiration is to develop the mightiest spell ever created—one that will transform her into a goddess the equal of Tiamat herself.

Bazotharax, “Lord of the Deep”: Deep Dragon Dracolich
When he was near death, Bazotharax paid a grand sum and gained the consultation of the Netherese Empire; these wizards aided him in the ritual of entering dracolichdom. As a dracolich, Bazotharax's cunning was reinforced by fearlessness. Now approximately 7000 years old, he has decided not to rest until he has raided the legendary Tomb Tapper Tomb in the bowels of the Underdark. He insists to his loyal council of Duergar liches that this is the only way he will become the wealthiest dragon in Toril.

Daer'Shalindrel: Black Dragon Dracolich
For thousands of years has Daer’Shalindrel lived in the Dark Places. He’s taken the bones from a countless number of creatures who’ve refused to serve him, and fused them into a great lair, full of the ancient relics he’s collected over time. This Bone Lair is a great structure, dimly illuminated by ghostlight, and is the home of the great Daer’Shalindrel, who still sometimes prowls the Dark Places in search of new treasures and new lives to end.

Eathrinkorrankh: Tarterian Dragon Dracolich Necromancer
Eathrin appears as an immense, withered tarterian dragon, chains wrapped around his body, ending in spikes that trail the ground behind him. It is the sound of these chains jangling that follow him wherever he goes. Eathrin sees graveyards, tombs and other burial sites as prisons, and seeks to raise the dead and bring them under his personal guard. So far, he has managed to amass a small army of undead animated from the casualties of the Blood War.

El'Jas-Yyrkull, “The Accursed and Undying”: Linnorm (Corpse Tearer) Dracolich
For countless centuries, this vile creature roamed far and wide, scouring the world for every scrap of knowledge he could gather, seeking to counter the only thing he feared—death itself. In his quest, he held entire nations ransom and laid waste to continents, his name synonymous with destruction. As his power and influence reached their peak, he finally undertook the sacred rites that would seal his soul and guarantee his immortality. Now a being of immeasurable power, El'Jas has grown bored with his place as the unrivaled lord of the entire Prime Material Plane. His quest is now to slay all living things, even the gods themselves.

Haurachloex: Styx Dragon Dracolich
Haurachloex was born on the plane of Hades, whose love for wanton destruction has placed him as one to avoid—for both sides—in the infinite Blood War. Some say he is a disaster, born for the taste of strife, while others claim him as a blood-thirsty miser, hoarding the treasures of both devils and demons. His intentions an enigma, Haurachloex has bound himself to one of the most powerful fiends in the lower planes, and waits for the zenith (or rather, the nadir) of the Blood War to reveal himself as an ally of this fiend's army.

Vrr’ragath, Red Dragon Dracolich Disciple of Ashardalon
Vrr’ragath keeps his lair deep within the fires of a massive volcano, surrounded by marshlands ruled by a powerful tribe of lizardfolk. Though they are powerful, Vrr’ragath still inspires terror in these locals, from whom he demands tribute; in addition to gold pillaged from nearby farms, they regularly bring him monitor lizards as a sacrifice, which he uses to ensure that he can take a new form in the unlikely event his body is ever destroyed. Vrr’ragath’s phylactery is a box constructed from his own scales, which contains within it Vrr’ragath’s demonic heart. This box is magically sealed and completely immune to all fire and heat damage—Vrr’ragath chose what he saw as the safest place for it: the bottom of his volcano’s magma chamber.
