The lure of a cosmopolitan city, brimming with prospects of adventure and intrigue, drew the attention a young elven noble. Dissatisfied with her current life at the elven court, she renounced her family and standing in the elven community to leave and take up the adventuring life. Amid the anonymity of a big city, she adopted the pseudonym "Lady Gray." This scant bit of information is all that is known of her past.
Once in the city, she adventured for a time with different groups, hiring herself out based on her trap-finding and other rogue skills. Eventually, the city's thieves' guild invited her to join them. Familiar with politics from her youth, she grew quickly in prestige within the guild. Her reach exceeded her grasp, however, and the guild master saw her as a threat. Guild rivals (with the approval of the guild master) tipped off the local constabulary, providing a physical description and proof of her crimes.
The City Watch
For months, Watch Detective* Grummond and Lady Gray matched wits against one another. After several encounters with the city watch, Lady Gray knew that someone in the guild was informing the local constabulary. She went to the guild master, who set her up to be ambushed during a robbery. Lady Gray barely escaped. Grummond relentlessly pursued her.
Annoyed with all that transpired, Lady Gray moved her larcenous operations to a nearby forest where she occasionally preyed upon travelers and small caravans as a highway robber. With an elf's long view, she felt the current situation was merely a temporary setback and in a few years she would return. To her surprise, she enjoyed the beauty of the forest. The city's splendor dimmed, and she devoted herself to ranger pursuits while seeking to make an illicit profit.
Slowly, her ambitions for wealth and power faded. The forest and its wonders grew more and more interesting to her, simultaneously challenging her and supporting her. She started the path to becoming a Queen of the Forest.*
