Opening Salvo: Reserves
Part 4: United States
by Robert Mull

Axis and Allies Miniatures: Reserves hits store shelves on November 10th. Last week we looked at the new German units, the Nebelwerfer 42 and the PzKpfw 38(T). This week we return to the Allies and take a look at two new American units.. Today's preview focuses on two well known units from World War II.

Thompson Gunner
The Thompson Gunner is your close assault shock troop. With 10 attack dice at close range the Thompson has a good chance of hurting even the toughest infantry unit. The Gung Ho special ability reflects the withering short range fire of the Thompson and ensures that once it moves into range, your opponent isn't going to be moving around you. The downside to the Thompson Gunner, and to all of the shock unit soldier types, is their limited range. An aggressive attacker and defender close in, the Thompson Gunner can't affect enemies more than 2 hexes away. Make good use of BAR or Bren units to provide covering fire for the Thompson until they get in close, then let the fireworks commence.

M4 Sherman T-34 Calliope
The M4 Sherman T-34 Calliope is an interesting twist on the M4A1 Sherman. The Calliope has better anti-soldier attack values then your stock Sherman. Its Top-Mounted Rockets give it its distinctive look and abilities. First, the Calliope's attacks ignore all cover. Tanks and infantry can no longer hide from this rocket firing unit. Once per game, the Calliope can unleash a rocket salvo much like a Katyusha or Nebelwerfer. This additional firepower comes at some cost. The Calliope has a slower speed than the stock Sherman, moving at a speed of 3, rather than 4. It also cannot attack aircraft because of it's Top-Mounted Rockets. It more than makes up for it's shortcomings though, especially when combined with a mixed Sherman force.

Check back next week when we preview more units from Axis and Allies Miniatures: Reserves. Next week's previews will feature the stat cards for the two minor nation units shown below. While you wait, go discuss this unit and other miniatures on our message boards.
