| Encirclement of Nancy Pt. I - Luneville |

Background
During the fall of Sept 12, 1944, major battles were fought in eastern France in an effort to force a crossing of the Moselle River. The cities of Metz and Nancy were the dual objectives. Initial attempts were either thwarted, or the bridgeheads were contained within strong German defensive lines. A second attempt in early September, reinforced by the 35th Infantry Division, made better headway. South of Nancy, reconnaissance elements of Combat Command B crossed the Meurth river and ran into their counterparts from 15th Panzergrenadier Division as it was falling back toward the town of Luneville.
