|Axis & Allies Air Force Miniatures: Bandits High, Pt. 1|
|by Mons Johnson|
Axis & Allies®Air Force Miniatures:Bandits High™ will be released on February 19, 2013. This first article looks at the contents of the Starter Set. Just like the Angels 20™ release, it includes everything you need to play the game, including stat cards, a battle map, a rulebook, counters and dice, and of course, six aircraft miniatures, one of which is available only in the Starter Set--the P-38J Lightning Ace!
If you are unfamiliar with the Axis & Allies Air Force Miniatures game, you can check out the six preview articles
for the Angels 20™ set . There, you can learn more about game play, view some of the miniatures from that set, and learn more about design decisions we made.
The first release, Angels 20, had a Battle of Britain theme, so for Bandits High we went to the other side of the globe: the Pacific theatre. The battle map shows an island, and the scenarios and aircraft selection are built around the air battles over the Pacific islands.
The rules are basically the same, but we did make a small but important change to help nimble aircraft such as the Zero. Under the old rules, each "6" that an attacker rolled counted as 2 hits regardless of the target number. Now, if modifiers (such as for Evading status) raise the target number for the attacker to 7 or more, a "6" counts for only 1 hit.
In addition, the Bandits High set has new rules to let you run bombing missions! Of course, bombing runs do require you to have bombers. The P-39D Rookie aircraft included in the Starter Set has the Close Support ability, which allows attacks against ground targets. Bandits High Booster Packs include other famous fighter-bombers or bombers such as the Typhoon Mk 1B, the IL-2 Sturmovik, and the JU-87 Stuka with its dreaded Dive Bomb ability.
That's it for now. In the next preview, we will take a closer look at some of the aircraft in the upcoming set.
