Dale Friesen
The tournament was held in Yellowjacket Comics & Toys on Saturday,
July 24, 1999, in Victoria, BC, Canada. There were eight players,
and they played eight rounds Swiss-style, followed by the final
four players competing for first place in single-elimination. I
gave the third and fourth players the option of competing for
third place. They elected to do so, their rationale being that the
dearth of DCI-sanctioned tournaments compels them to participate
in as many sanctioned rounds as possible. I suggested to one of
them that he investigate the possibility of becoming a tournament
organizer for the DCI, and he promised to look into it.
All of the participants were experienced players; one individual
was new to the DCI, but had played many matches in non-tournament
situations. In many respects it was an ideal tournament; there
were no difficult rulings questions, and the players were
invariably polite and self-policing. I was the only judge, and
I found that I could spend most of my time sitting and watching
the games.
In all, it was an excellent tournament. The players all commented
on how much fun it was. I hope that this event and a few more like
it will inspire the local Magic community to support further
tournaments.
