South Africa Regional Qualifier |
April 11, 1999 - 45 Players
Mark Ogden
General description of judging staff Head Judge Level III, 3 other judges at
Level I, 2 Admin people (one true admin, the other a Level II judge)
The event was notable in that most of South Africa's Johannesburg rated
players were excluded through having qualified by DCI rating. In all 11 places
were available for Nationals and that resulted in 9 rounds of Swiss. Reporting
was done using DCI Reporter but names were captured on the day. Downside was
that a player gave incorrect DCI number (actually was that of another player on
the day - both had registered together at a previous event). Using the DCI
database information would have prevented what could have potentially been an
admin problem.
Overall the event ran smoothly with no real problems. As I recall there were
only 4 warnings, none for sportsmanship issues and only 1 for being late for the
start of a round.
I am not in favour of holding events in Shopping Malls as it being a public
place it is sometimes difficult to control the smoking habits of casual
observers. Having said that it was a great way to introduce people to the game.
We must have handed out about 50 Portal demo game packs.
One of the serious shortfalls is the quantity of good judges available.
Overall the guys did a good job but I didn't have the quantity to conduct deck
checks etc. Fortunately there were absolutely no accusations of cheating or
sideboard manipulation.
