2012 Friday Night Magic Championship

The 2012 Friday Night Magic Championship will take place on August 16-17, 2012 in Indianapolis, USA at Gen Con.

The Swiss rounds, quarterfinals, and semifinals will be played Thursday, August 16, 2012 and the finals will be played on Friday, August 17, 2012. The tournament will start at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Prizes

First place will receive the 2012 Friday Night Magic Championship Trophy, a framed display containing one of each Friday Night Magic promo card from the history of the Friday Night Magic program (through August, 2013), and one (1) complete, foil set of each Standard-format legal expansion and core set: Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Avacyn Restored, Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, New Phyrexia, Magic 2012, and Magic 2013.

Second place will receive one (1) complete, foil set of each Standard-format legal expansion and core set: Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Avacyn Restored, Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, New Phyrexia, Magic 2012, and Magic 2013.

Third and fourth places will each receive one (1) complete, regular set of each Standard-format legal expansion and core set: Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Avacyn Restored, Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, New Phyrexia, Magic 2012, and Magic 2013.

Booster prizes will be awarded to finishers from 5th through 32nd places:

 Registration  

Registration for the 2012 Friday Night Magic Championship will take place at the following times:

Wednesday, August 15: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. (18:00 to 21:00)
Thursday, August 16: 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (9:30 to 16:30) - BADGE PICK-UP ONLY

Your badge for Gen Con is being provided by Wizards of the Coast. Do not go to Gen Con registration to pick up your badge. Players MUST have a badge in order to enter Gen Con.

Wednesday badge pick-up/registration and Thursday badge pick-up will take place at:

Players who pick up their badge on Thursday morning will need to proceed directly to the Friday Night Magic Championship tournament area in the Indiana Convention Center (Hall G) to register for the tournament.

We encourage players to register on Wednesday, August 15. However we understand that delays might cause players to miss this and we will have late registration on Thursday morning, August 16 from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. (9:30 to 10:30).

The Friday Night Magic Championship will begin at 11 a.m. (11:00) on Thursday, August 16. Players who have not registered by 10:30 a.m. (10:30) on Thursday, August 16 may be denied entry to the Friday Night Magic Championship

To register, all participants must present one of the following forms of identification:

  • a driver’s license, or
  • a passport, or
  • a copy of a birth certificate and photo IDs (school IDs are acceptable).

Players must have a signed waiver and consent form to compete at the 2012 Friday Night Magic Championship. Forms can be downloaded at www.wizards.com/protour and will be available onsite.

Minors must have a parent or guardian’s signature on these forms. Minors will not be able to register or play unless we receive a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. No exceptions!

Bring these forms with you to registration. We will make forms available for competitors at registration, if necessary.

Format

Tournament Length

  • 7 Swiss Rounds total, 55 minutes per round.
  • When time is called, the active player will finish the turn and five additional turns will be taken.
  • Stalling and slow play rules will be strictly enforced during the tournament.

Advancement

  • All players may participate in all Swiss rounds.
  • The top 8 players after the final Swiss round will advance to the single-elimination playoff.

Playoff

  • Playoff matches will be best 2 of 3.
  • Playoff matches will be single-elimination
  • Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will still be used to determine final order in the standings.
  • While there are no time limits in the Top 8, players are expected to play at a reasonable pace and finish their matches within 75 minutes.
  • For the first game of each match in the Top 8, the player that finished higher in the Swiss rounds chooses either to play first or to play second. For subsequent games in each Top 8 match, the usual Play/Draw rule applies (loser of the previous game decides whether to play first in the next game).
