What is the Magic Online Worlds Qualifier?

This is a one-time event that gives Magic Online™ players an opportunity to qualify for the 2004 Magic: The Gathering® World Championships in San Francisco

 

What is the tournament structure?

On Monday, July 26th through Saturday August 7th , there will be a series of 72 online constructed tournaments. The Top 8 finishers from each of these tournaments will be allowed to play in a final online tournament at 9:00 A.M. (Pacific Daylight Time) on Sunday, August 8th. The winner of the final tournament will receive the invitation to play at the 2004 World Championships.

When does it take place?

Preliminary tournaments for the Magic Online Worlds Qualifier take place Monday, July 26th through Saturday, August 7th.

The Magic Online Worlds Qualifier takes place on Sunday, August 8 at 9:00 A.M.

What is the format?

The format of the preliminary tournaments will be Online Standard, Online Extended or Mirrodin™ Block Constructed. Fifth Dawn™ cards will be legal in all formats.Click here for more information on Constructed formats.

The format for the Magic Online Worlds Qualifier will be Online Standard.

How long will these tournaments take to finish?

The Preliminary tournaments have a maximum of 128 players. A 128-player tournament will have 7 rounds of Swiss, followed by a top 8 finals. For the final players, that's 10 rounds.

The final event will have 576 invitations, which would make the tournament 10 rounds of Swiss, followed by a top 8 finals. The tournaments take about one hour per round. For the final players, that’s 13 rounds.

 

Where do I find the qualifier tournaments?

You can find the qualifier tournaments listed in the Premier Events room as soon as they're set up.

 

How do I sign up for a qualifier tournament?

Go to the Premier Events room and click "Starting Time" to sort the list of tournaments by starting time. Scroll down to the one you want to join, select it, and then click the Go To button on the bottom right corner of the window. Once you're in the tournament room, click Join.

Note: You'll be asked for your deck when you join the tournament, so make sure you have a deck ready.

 

What is the cost to enter the tournaments?

Each of the 72 preliminary tournaments will have an entry fee of ten event tickets. The final tournament on Sunday, August 8th, will be free to all qualified participants.

 

Who can enter?

Anyone may enter the tournament, even if he or she is previously qualified for the 2004 World Championships. Each player will be required to have a Magic Online account and a legal deck.

 

What are the prizes?

The winner of the final tournament receives an invitation to the 2004 World Championshipss in San Francisco, including two round-trip economy-class tickets from the winner's location to San Francisco and five nights hotel accommodation during Worlds*.

For Sunday's final tournament, the booster pack prizes will be six times (6x) what the prizes for a normal 128 tournament would be. In addition, there will be online booster pack prizes for the top 32 finishing players. The booster pack prizes for 9th through 32nd place will not be paid automatically, but will be manually granted to players immediately following the Swiss portion of the event:

What happens if someone wins who is already invited to 2004 Worlds?

If a player wins who has previously qualified for Worlds in San Francisco the Airfare and accommodations will be awarded to that player while the invitation to 2004 Worlds will pass down to the player with the best finish who is not already invited to Worlds. The final Swiss standings will determine the difference between third and fourth place and the difference between fifth through eighth place, should that be necessary.

 

What if a player wins who is suspended from DCI-sanctioned tournaments?

If a player wins that is ineligible to play in DCI®-sanctioned tournament (i.e. DCI suspended and/or a paid contractor), then the Worlds invitation and the travel and accommodation prizes will pass down to the player with the best finish who is not already invited to Worlds. The final Swiss standings will determine the difference between third and fourth place and the difference between fifth through eighth place, should that be necessary.

 

Do the other prizes also pass down?

The booster pack prizes will not pass down.

 

Player Information & Logistics

In order to remain eligible for the invitation, all qualified players must email molworldsqt@wizards.com before the start of the final tournament with the following information: Full Legal Name, Full Address, Phone, and DCI number with their Username as the subject. (Account passwords will not be requested--never give your password to anyone.) In addition, during the tournament, Wizards of the Coast staff (marked with the Wizards logo beside their online name) may ask players for their names.

Failure to provide accurate information may result in significant penalties, including suspension from both online & physical Magic tournaments.

  * The Magic Online™ travel prize package includes round-trip, coach airfare for the winner and a guest from the major airport nearest the winner’s home to San Francisco, CA to attend the Magic the Gathering ® 2004 World Championship held on September 1, 2004, and double occupancy accommodations at a hotel chosen by Wizards of the Coast, Inc. Meals, gratuities, ground transportation and all other expenses not specified herein are the winner’s responsibility. All taxes are the responsibility of the winner. A representative of Wizards of the Coast, Inc. will contact the winner regarding this prize package. This prize is non-negotiable. Trip must be taken on the dates designated by Wizards, or prize will be forfeited and will not be re-awarded. Specific travel dates and arrangements are subject to availability. Winner and guest must travel together on same itinerary. The winner and his/her guest will be required to sign a waiver and release prior to travel; failure to do so will result in disqualification.
