  • The letter W!elcome to Selecting Tenth Edition, where over the next ten weeks you'll get the chance to play the role of R&D Developer, Art Director, flavor text judge, and even Brand Manager for Magic's milestone tenth core set! Starting today and running into August, each Wednesday we'll give you a set of votes that give you the chance to shape how the future set comes out. If you've ever had an opinion about which cards you think do or don't belong in the core set, how they look, or even more, this is where you get to weigh in. Each vote changes the set, and each one is up to the readers.

For those that aren't familiar with what we're doing here, you'll want to click the links on the right for Selecting Eighth Edition and Selecting Ninth Edition to get caught up. This time around we'll have five different categories for your voting pleasure.

    Card vs. Card

Often the most hotly debated part of these promotions, in each of these votes you'll get to choose which card makes it into Tenth Edition. This time around we're throwing in a new twist: R&D members Aaron Forsythe and Matt Place will weigh in on each of these votes, letting you know why they think their particular card is best for the set. Once you're done reading their recommendations, it's you that gets the development call to say which card sees print next year. So, even if you personally don't expect to use the card or cards in question, you get to put on your R&D hat and decide whether others should get the chance, and what's best for the Core Set in your own opinion. These votes have sent the message boards into a frenzy in the past as players argued their cases and cheered or railed at the results, and we don't expect this one to be any different. No matter what kind of player you are, this summer is going to have some votes we're sure will raise eyebrows.

    Sketches Contest

Last year we tried letting players choose between competing sketches for cards to see which would get the chance to become the fully polished pieces that would make it into print. This year we're giving you the same chance but taking it one step further. This time, you'll get to know all eight cards up for art voting, and the sixteen artists that will be submitting sketches. This week, you'll get to assign each artist to each piece. Which card would Matt Cavotta do the best job with? Who gets Lord of the Pit? It's up to you! After that, Art Director Jeremy Jarvis will have each set of artists sketch the pieces you assigned to them. As they come in, you'll get the chance to pick your favorite sketch each week, starting in July.

    Basic Land Art

Just about every player has favorite land art from specific blocks, so we thought we'd give you the chance to vote them in for Tenth Edition. This week you'll get the chance to choose your four favorite Magic blocks of all time for basic land art. Once we've got that Top 4, we'll vote each week to select your favorite basic lands from each of those blocks. Can't get enough copies of so-and-so's Swamp from such-and-such block? Here's your chance to try and get it reprinted!

    Flavor Text

For each set the Creative Team manages a group of flavor text writers, choosing the best submissions so that they make it onto the cards of the set. For the final three weeks of this promotion they'll hand that ability over to you. In each vote, the Creative Team will present their list of finalists from the flavor text writers for each card. Pick your favorite for each, and the ones with the most votes will make it onto the cards.

    You Be the Brand Manager

This one's a secret vote for now, but we can tell you that it will happen in the tenth week of voting on Tenth Edition. What could it be? For now you'll just have to guess. Here's a hint though: it's a fun vote that Brand really hopes turns out a certain way, but you'll have the chance to overturn them if you want it badly enough.
