Prime Speaker Bant

The letter L!et's wrap up the week the way we started it: a sweet Bant Standard deck. While it shares the colors of the Fog deck, this list couldn't be more of an opposite in terms of how it plays and how it wins. This particular list was piloted by Josh Ravitz to 4th place at a PTQ, and he wrote about the experience here.

Dragon's Maze helped Bant out quite a bit, giving it access to Voice of Resurgence and Ætherling, with Voice being particularly important. Voice is an interactive two-drop, something the deck sorely needed, and more than pulls its weight against control and aggro alike. Pre-Dragon's Maze Bant lists relied way too much on having Farseek on turn two, so the addition of Voice really shores up the biggest weakness of the deck.

Bant is a pretty classic midrange deck and is primed to dominate the midgame with a curve of Avacyn's Pilgrim, Voice of Resurgence, Loxodon Smiter, Restoration Angel, Garruk Relentless, and Thragtusk. Its late game isn't bad either, with Prime Speaker Zegana, Ætherling, Angel of Serenity, and Sphinx's Revelation all providing a way to finish the game. I especially like the Progenitor Mimic, which combines very well with any number of the creatures in the deck.

Unlike most Sphinx's Revelation decks, this is basically all creatures, so the play experience is completely different. You are just slamming threat after threat, and counting on the resilience of your creatures to leave you ahead when the dust settles. That's a good strategy, as creatures are insane nowadays, and the four Planeswalkers help give you a little insurance against removal-heavy opponents.

The new legend rule does impact the sideboard a little, with Clone no longer answering Geist of Saint Traft the way it used to. That doesn't make Clone bad, since I still like it against Junk Reanimator, but if your metagame has too much Bant Hexproof, other solutions are needed.
