here was a time in my Magic career where playing with slow clunky combos was all I wanted to be doing. If it took time and finesse to set up, but left my opponent questioning what just happened, I was happy. One such card that saw plenty of attempts at becoming the backbone of such a deck of mine was Patron of the Moon. Moonfolk offering was such a strange ability, and putting a bunch of lands into play seemed abusable. Sadly for Patron of the Moon and me, I never figured out the right deck for the Moonfolk end boss before it rotated out of Standard.
Enter Jules Robins, over at GatheringMagic.com, who has been on a tear lately with innovative Commander lists. Jules decided to put the flashiest (get it?) of the Moonfolk at the center of a Commander shell and give it a whirl. Patron of the Moon is naturally a ramp spell at its core and Jules made sure to take advantage of this. Casting Kozilek or Myojin of Seeing Winds is a snap when you deploy an early Patron, draw some cards, and snap your lands into play.
That said, Patron also enables some cool combos in addition to just ramping your lands. For example, what would happen if you had Patron of the Moon, Meloku the Clouded Mirror, and an Amulet of Vigor all in play? That is quite a lot of Spirits. But going even further, what if one of our lands was a Temple of the False God?
