The letter W!elcome to the Innistrad edition of the Lexicon, in which we explore the meanings of some of the more unusual words we use in the names of those cards. While many offbeat names in Magic (like "moldgraf") are simply made up, we often dig around dictionaries for real little-used and archaic words for inspiration.

a slaughterhouse.



pri•mor•di•al
noun

  1. constituting a beginning; giving origin to something derived or developed; original; elementary: primordial forms of life.
  2. Embryology. first formed.
  3. pertaining to or existing at or from the very beginning: primordial matter.


ne•o•nate
noun

a newborn child, or one in its first 28 days.



par•a•se•le•ne
noun

a bright moonlike spot on a lunar halo; a mock moon.



tre•pan
noun

  1. a tool for cutting shallow holes by removing a core.
  2. Surgery. an obsolete form of the trephine resembling a carpenter's bit and brace.


ban•shee
noun

(in Irish folklore) a spirit in the form of a wailing woman who appears to or is heard by members of a family as a sign that one of them is about to die.
