Excerpts: Bravura Presence
Martial Power

In today’s Martial Power preview, we introduce you to the basics of the warlord's chapter, as well as a new feature: Bravura Presence.

The Warlord

“Recklessness is still a tactical choice, and adaptability is an asset to any leader. If putting your own skin on the line saves your friends some pain, I say recklessness is more fun.”

Whether called to lead by talent or fate, or trained to lead as a soldier or a noble, a warlord must always acknowledge the importance of the team.

A warlord forms the core of a squad, using martial know-how to manipulate any battle toward a favorable outcome. The notion of martial leadership includes countless techniques of command. Raw charisma can push allies to new heights, and strategic genius can create triumph where none seems possible. However, those are only two possibilities among many.

You could be the kind of leader who likes hard-hitting tactics and living on the edge. Maybe you just prefer to risk yourself rather than your friends, knowing that you have the guile and strength to pull off your style of daring leadership. Instead, you might prefer to play it fast and loose, observing the tactical situation and solving the problem with astounding ingenuity.

Rouse your allies to wrath and determination, come up with incisive tactics on the fly, create openings with your headlong rushes, or mix and match your strategies. No matter how you prefer to lead your allies to victory, the warlord chapter of Martial Power is for you. In it, you’ll find the following information.

  • New Warlord Builds: Charge into battle as an aggressive bravura warlord, or test your creativity and battle acumen as a resourceful warlord.

  • New Class Features: Two alternative choices give you the opportunity to focus your warlord even more sharply on one of the new builds.

  • New Warlord Powers: Trick your enemies into overextending, and then make them pay. If you prefer more subtle methods, the exploits in this section also have you and your allies covered.

  • New Paragon Paths: Channel your knack for leading into one of twelve new paths. Lead by following the example of a deity, march to traditional methods set by legendary generals, or let the law of the frontier be your guide.

New Class Feature

These two variants of the Commanding Presence class feature are available to any warlord. You can pick one of them instead of another version, such as Inspiring Presence or Tactical Presence.

Bravura Presence: When an ally who can see you spends an action point to take an extra action and uses the action to make an attack, the ally can choose to take advantage of this feature before the attack roll. If the ally chooses to do so and the attack hits, the ally can either make a basic attack or take a move action after the attack as a free action. If the attack misses, the ally grants combat advantage to all enemies until the end of his or her next turn.

Level 1 At-Will

Opening Shove
Warlord Attack 1
You knock your foe off-balance while shouting a quick command to an ally.
At-Will Martial, Weapon
Standard Action Melee weapon
Target: One creature
Attack: Strength vs. Reflex
Hit: You push the target 1 square. Then choose one ally you can see. That ally either shifts a number of squares equal to your Intelligence modifier or makes a melee basic attack against the target.

Level 13 Encounter

Unified in Blood
Warlord Attack 13
Rushing to defend a friend in trouble, you make a bold attack. Your friend then defends himself by your example.
Encounter Martial, Weapon
Immediate Interrupt Melee weapon
Trigger: An enemy within 5 squares of you bloodies an ally
Target: The triggering enemy
Effect: Before the attack, you can move your speed.
Attack: Strength vs. AC
Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier damage, and the bloodied ally can make a basic attack against the target as a free action.

Level 23 Encounter

Daring Display
Warlord Attack 23
You fling yourself against your enemy brutally, unleashing a fury that draws the eye of nearby enemies.
Encounter Martial, Weapon
Standard Action Melee weapon
Target: One creature
Attack: Strength vs. Fortitude
Hit: 4[W] + Strength modifier damage, and you mark and grant combat advantage to every enemy within 2 squares of you until the end of your next turn. Each of the enemies that attacks you grants combat advantage to your allies until the end of its next turn.
Bravura Presence: The attack deals extra damage equal to your Charisma modifier, and you can shift 1 square, whether or not you hit.

Level 27 Encounter Exploits

Abrupt Skirmish
Warlord Attack 27
Using feigned weakness or harsh words, you goad your enemies to attack you. Your allies instantly fall upon your foes in turn.
Encounter Martial, Weapon
Standard Action Close burst 2
Target: Each enemy in burst you can see
Effect: You pull each target 1 square to a space adjacent to you. You can’t pull a target that can’t end adjacent to you. You then attack one of the targets.
Attack: Strength vs. AC
Hit: 4[W] + Strength modifier damage. Each enemy adjacent to you can make a melee basic attack against you as a free action, but each of your allies can make a basic attack against the enemy as an opportunity action triggered by the enemy’s attack.
Bravura Presence: Each ally gains a power bonus to the attack roll and the damage roll equal to your Charisma modifier.
